FINSIA’s Young Finance Professionals (YFP) gathered in Brisbane on Thursday evening, 21 September 2023, to meet with a selection of Senior Mentors who assembled to help our new generation of banking and financial advice leaders discuss the challenges of their industry. I was one of the Senior Mentors and I would like to share how impressed I was with the caliber of our newest members of the Financial Services Industry.
FINSIA (Financial Services Institute of Australasia) is the peak professional body for the financial services industry in Australia and New Zealand. There are over 14,000 financial services professionals representing banking, institutional markets, funds management, financial advice, and securities sectors. Within the organization, there are numerous special interest groups.
One very active group is the Young Finance Professionals. In Queensland, the committee is headed by Petra Kliese who ensures that members have many networking and educational opportunities at social gatherings..
As I spoke with committee members and those who came to learn from both their contemporaries and senior members of FINSIA, it was obvious that the future of the financial services industry is in good hands.
It was an inspiration to listen to these young people sharing their hopes and inspiration as they step into the world of finance. In a world that is constantly changing, we discussed how to meet the future challenges they will face. I am sure these young leaders will follow in the footsteps of those who have preceded them and keep our industry strong.
During the evening, each Senior Leader sat at a table and members from the YPF rotated through several of the tables so that everyone had plenty of networking and learning experiences. To get the conversation started there was a range of questions posed to both the present and future leaders.
Some of the topics discussed were:
- What has been the highlight of your career so far?
- What has been your greatest achievement?
- Who has influenced you most professionally and personally?
- What is the best/worst piece of advice given to you?
- How do you stay up to date with trends?
Regardless of your career choice, maybe it is time to stop and reflect on the questions posed.
